Hot Topics in VAT - Beatriz Artal, Associate Director - Tax, Grant Thornton

The purpose of this presentation is to provide the attendees with an overview of topical areas of VAT in the current environment and how businesses should be dealing with them. One of the topics that we will cover is the provision of emergency accommodation and how it affects the recovery of input VAT credits and the adjustments to the capital goods records.

We will also cover the topic of VAT on property. Every property transaction has a VAT consequence. Some examples are as follows:

  • A company decides to sell its shares and it owns properties
  • Pre-sale restructuring involving properties
  • Transfers of properties within groups i.e. property transactions between members of a VAT group should not be ignored for VAT purposes – joint and several liability
  • Change of use of a property from a hotel to emergency accommodation
  • Surrender or assignment of a lease
  • Sale of properties pre succession planning

Another topic that we will cover is the VAT recovery on deal fees in M&A transactions and the importance of obtaining advice to set up the optimal structure followed by the implementation of this advice.

Lastly, we will provide an update on VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA) which will introduce major changes to the EU’s VAT system which businesses will be required to implement by 1 July 2030.
