HMRC is encouraging agents to sign their clients up to MTD for Income Tax testing.
The tax authority said taking part will involve joining MTD for Income Tax early. Those who sign up for the trial will need to use compatible software to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC.
In a letter to agents HMRC said: “By joining the testing programme you will have access to the dedicated MTD Customer Support Team to help you successfully transition to MTD for Income Tax and handle any issues.
“For those who join testing in 2024 to 2025, the team can also support the individual, or their agent, with some of the individual’s wider personal tax affairs (individual PAYE and Self Assessment matters) for the 2024 to 2025 financial year.”
HMRC said those wanting to sign up can do so via its website. By going to the ‘Get Started’ section of agents can check which clients are able to participate and check the available software options.
It said: “We’ll be expanding eligibility as we approach 2026 and more software options will be available in the next few months. We’ll keep you updated on changes to eligibility and if your preferred software provider isn't listed yet, please contact them to check their plans for joining MTD.”
HMRC it also reminded agents that joining MTD for Income Tax will become a legal requirement. From 6 April 2026, it will become mandatory in phases based on total annual income from self-employment or property.
