AIA Council member, Dr. Peter Ellington, has been appointed as an Advisor to the Quality Assurance Agency for University Education (QAA) benchmarking review for Accountancy Education.

Peter’s role in this review is to advocate for the representation of SME accountancy practices, ensuring their perspectives are thoroughly considered in the evaluation process. With his extensive experience and insights into the dynamics of accountancy practice, Peter will make invaluable contributions to the review.

"Being an advisor for the QAA benchmarking review is a tremendous opportunity to shape the future of accountancy education in the UK. I am committed to representing the interests of SME practices and ensuring that our profession's educational standards remain responsive to the evolving needs of the industry," said Peter Ellington.

The appointment coincides with QAA's confirmation of the membership of advisory groups for the Subject Benchmark Statements to be reviewed in 2024-25. These statements define the academic standards expected of graduates, ensuring their relevance to the discipline communities. The review, spanning over the next 9 to 18 months, holds the promise of reshaping the landscape of accounting education in the UK, culminating in a comprehensive update to guidance provided to academics.

Of particular significance is Peter’s involvement in the working group examining education for sustainable development in accounting. This underscores his commitment to fostering a curriculum that addresses pressing social and environmental imperatives.

AIA Chief Executive, Philip Turnbull remarked, "AIA continues its steadfast dedication to upholding excellence in accountancy education and practice. Dr. Peter Ellington's appointment stands as a testament to his and AIA’s unwavering commitment to fostering inclusivity, sustainability, and innovation in the realm of accounting education."
